How To Graft.com Email List Groups

A brief description and link for each group

We have founded, own or moderate in some of these but not all. We do feel that all offer valuable information on their topics. We also find them to be mostly spam and flame free. We would be remiss not to offer a public thanks here to those who also co-own, moderate and assist in the groups. THANKS to all.

What are these 'groups'? Most of them are hosted by Yahoo as a free service to the Internet community. To use them you may need to open an account if you don't already have one, this is also free and not difficult. Their membership contains people from all levels of experience from many locations.

When you send an email to the group everyone sees it and can reply. Good groups provide varying levels of moderation to prevent spammers from posting messages. This is usually accomplished by moderating new members for a period of time. Most people never even know they were moderated. The memberships are usually not localized and if you ask, "Which citrus is the best rootstock?" you may get answers that differ from Florida, California, Texas, Hawai'i, Mexico and Australia. The answers you get will usually be accurate - but geographical locations and climate, disease and other factors can make some general answers inaccurate for your plants. A better way to get the information you need is to ask a more specific question. "What rootstock is best for my oranges in Louisiana?"

Location can be important to the simplest of questions and most list members will be happier if you include some reference to your physical location in the message. The preferred way is to include it in your signature line. Here are some examples (but you can be more imaginative):

Bob
SW Florida USA
Karl
Perth Australia
Jade
Mexico City
Bill
Zone9 San Francisco

Experience has taught that just listing a growing zone is not always good enough. Someone in Zone 9 in Florida has far different conditions than Zone 9 in England or Spain. We recommend that you NOT list your address though for security reasons. If you need to give someone on a list your address or telephone number send it to them direct.

There are a lot of groups to choose from, some more active than others. We recommend that you maintain membership in a general plant group (and invite you to join the rarefruit group if not already a member)  as well as one that is specific to your plants or topic. If you find that you are getting too many emails in your mailbox just go to the group's home page and then change your settings to "Special Notices" then read the messages on the groups home page - easy!
